Crafted in Color: A Journey Through MESTIZ
This week, curated by LOUFRE HABITATS: MESTIZ
Step into the vibrant, sun-drenched world of MESTIZ, the design studio of Daniel Valero. Based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, his work is a bold and joyful ode to heritage—where traditional craftsmanship meets wildly imaginative forms.
Valero describes his creations as wild objects, and it’s easy to see why. Every piece—whether a sculptural lamp, a hand-woven rug, or a flora-inspired installation—feels alive, brimming with texture, color, and a quiet humor that disarms and delights.
With MESTIZ, the materials speak first. Woven palm, hand-carved wood, and richly dyed Saltillo serapes form the language of the studio. The colors are never random; they echo the earth, the sun, the spirit of a place. His compositions feel like memories made tangible—familiar, yet completely new.
Recent collaborations include scenography for Hermès (for the third year in a row), immersive work for the Auberge Resorts Collection, and an ofrenda altar at Rockefeller Center celebrating the sun’s life-giving presence. Each project is both grounded and fantastical, rooted in tradition while reaching toward the future.
And soon, visitors to San Miguel will be able to stay overnight inside a one-of-a-kind inhabitable installation—an experience designed entirely by MESTIZ, where flora and fauna-inspired objects create a dreamlike, living gallery.
At LOUFRE HABITATS, we’re drawn to makers like Valero—those who break rules gently, with reverence and rhythm, and remind us that design can be both soulful and bold.
